Sewer Smell in the House

Why does my house smell like sewage?

New supply and drain rough-in plumbing inside an open wall
Short answerA sewer smell indoors usually comes from a dry drain trap, a failed toilet wax ring, a blocked or damaged vent, or a cracked drain pipe letting sewer gas escape. Run water in unused drains first; if the smell stays, the drain or vent system needs inspection.
Fix soon

A faint occasional odor can be scheduled, but a strong, persistent sewer smell should be checked promptly — sewer gas is unpleasant and can indicate a drain leak.

Emergency, or can it wait?

Call right away if…

  • Smell with sewage visible
  • Strong odor plus symptoms like headache or nausea (ventilate and leave)

Usually OK to schedule if…

  • Faint smell from a rarely used drain

Signs of sewer smell in the house

1Odor near a rarely used drain
2Smell around the base of a toilet
3Odor in the basement near the floor drain
4Smell that gets worse when fixtures drain
5Odor outdoors near the foundation

What causes it

01

Dry P-trap

Traps hold water to block sewer gas; in unused sinks, showers and floor drains the water evaporates.

02

Failed wax ring

A toilet seal that has failed lets gas escape at the base.

03

Blocked vent

A clogged roof vent can siphon traps dry and let odors in.

04

Cracked drain or loose cleanout cap

Damaged pipe or an open cleanout releases gas inside walls or basements.

What you can check yourself

  • Run water in every unused drain for a minute
  • Check that floor drains and cleanouts are capped
  • Look for a wobbly toilet
  • Note if gurgling happens with the smell

What happens when a plumber arrives

  1. Smoke test the drain-waste-vent system to find leaks.
  2. Inspect toilet seals and cleanouts.
  3. Check the roof vent for blockages.
  4. Camera-inspect drains when the source is hidden.

Sewer Smell in the House: questions homeowners ask

Is sewer gas dangerous?

In typical household amounts it’s mainly unpleasant, but high concentrations can cause headaches and nausea. Ventilate the area and find the source.

Why does my bathroom smell like sewage only sometimes?

Intermittent odors often come from a partially blocked vent or a trap that siphons when other fixtures drain.

Can a toilet leak cause a sewer smell without water on the floor?

Yes. A failed wax ring can leak gas without obvious water.

What is a smoke test?

A plumber pushes harmless smoke into the drain system; wherever smoke escapes shows a crack, open fitting or failed seal.

Why does my basement smell like sewage?

A dry floor drain trap is the most common cause. Pour water into it; if the smell continues, check the cleanout cap and drain lines.
