Sewer Line Repair

Sewer Camera Inspection

People who want to see inside their sewer line, for recurring clogs or before buying a home.

What it isA sewer camera inspection sends a waterproof camera on a flexible push rod through the sewer lateral to record its condition. It shows whether a clog was caused by a soft blockage or by a defect such as roots, cracks, offsets or a belly, and it locates each problem by distance and depth so any repair is targeted.

When you need sewer camera inspection

  • Before buying a home, especially one more than a few decades old
  • After a main line clog, to find the cause
  • When clogs return after cleaning
  • Before choosing between spot repair, lining and replacement
  • After a repair, to verify the work

How it works

  1. The camera enters through a cleanout, roof vent or a pulled toilet.
  2. The operator records video while noting the footage counter at each finding.
  3. A transmitter in the camera head lets a locator find its position and depth above ground.
  4. Findings are reviewed with the homeowner, ideally with a copy of the video.

Limits and when it’s not the right fix

  • Standing water or heavy debris can hide defects; the line may need cleaning first.
  • A camera shows the inside surface but cannot always judge wall thickness of corroded cast iron.
  • Lines with a full blockage must be opened before the camera can pass.

What affects the cost

We don’t publish national price figures because real quotes vary too much by region, access and the condition of your system. These are the factors that move the price:

  • Access point availability
  • Need to clean the line first
  • Locating and marking defects
  • Recorded video and written report

Ask for a written quote that names the method, materials and any permit or restoration work before work begins.

Sewer Camera Inspection: common questions

Should I get a sewer inspection before buying a house?

For older homes, homes with mature trees in the yard, or homes with clay, cast iron or Orangeburg sewer pipe, a sewer scope is one of the most useful pre-purchase checks. Standard home inspections usually do not include it.

How long does a sewer camera inspection take?

A straightforward inspection from an accessible cleanout is commonly completed within an hour or so. Lines that need clearing first, or that have no cleanout, take longer.

Can a camera find the location of a broken pipe?

Yes. Most sewer cameras carry a transmitter, so a locator above ground can find the exact spot and approximate depth of any defect.

Can I get a copy of the video?

You should ask for one. A recorded video lets you get a second opinion and gives a contractor exact distances to work from.
