Plumbing problem

Gurgling Drains

Why are my drains gurgling?

Plumber adjusting a P-trap under a sink
Short answerDrains gurgle when air is being pulled through water in the traps because the drain or vent is partly blocked. One gurgling sink usually means a local clog or vent issue; gurgling at several fixtures — especially a toilet when the tub drains — points to a developing main line blockage.
Fix soon

Gurgling is an early warning. Fixing it now is usually far easier than cleaning up a backup later.

Emergency, or can it wait?

Call right away if…

  • Gurgling followed by water rising in other drains

Usually OK to schedule if…

  • Occasional gurgle with normal drainage

Signs of gurgling drains

1Toilet bubbles when a sink or tub drains
2Sink gurgles after draining
3Slow drains along with the noise
4Sewer smell near the gurgling fixture

What causes it

01

Partial drain clog

Buildup restricts flow so air is drawn through traps.

02

Blocked vent

Leaves, nests or ice in a roof vent stop air from entering the system.

03

Main line restriction

Roots or debris in the main cause gurgling at multiple fixtures.

04

Missing or failed air admittance valve

Many sinks in islands and remodeled bathrooms are vented with an air admittance valve under the cabinet. When its seal sticks closed, the fixture gurgles and drains slowly.

05

Improper trap or drain slope

S-traps, long horizontal runs and drains with too little slope let water siphon traps and pull air through the system, which is common in DIY remodels.

06

Septic system problems

On septic, a full tank or saturated drainfield slows the whole house and causes gurgling at the lowest fixtures first.

What you can check yourself

  • One fixture or many?
  • Does the toilet gurgle when the washer drains?
  • Any slow drains or odors?

What happens when a plumber arrives

  1. Note which fixtures gurgle and whether it happens when another fixture drains.
  2. Run water at the highest and lowest fixtures to see whether the problem is local or system-wide.
  3. Check under-sink air admittance valves and look at visible traps for S-trap or improper connections.
  4. Inspect the roof vent for debris, nests or ice where safe to do so.
  5. Run a camera through the main line if multiple fixtures are affected.

Gurgling Drains: questions homeowners ask

Is a gurgling toilet serious?

It’s an early sign of a drain or vent problem. If it happens with slow drains elsewhere, the main line may be partly blocked.

Can a blocked vent cause gurgling?

Yes. Without venting, draining water pulls air through other fixture traps, causing gurgling and siphoned traps.

Why does my sink gurgle when the washing machine drains?

The large volume from the washer can expose a partial blockage or venting problem in the shared drain.

Will a plunger fix a gurgling drain?

It may clear a local clog, but gurgling at several fixtures needs the main line or vent addressed.

Why does my bathtub gurgle when I flush the toilet?

Toilet flushes push a large volume through the shared drain. If the line is partly blocked or poorly vented, air is pushed back through the tub drain, so it gurgles.

Can a gurgling drain let sewer gas into my home?

Yes. If gurgling siphons water out of a trap, sewer gas can come in through the empty trap. A sewer smell along with gurgling is a sign to call.

Is a gurgling drain on a septic system an emergency?

Not usually right away, but gurgling plus slow drains throughout the house can mean the tank needs pumping or the drainfield is struggling. Reduce water use and schedule service.
