Hard Water Problems

What does hard water do to plumbing?

Short answerHard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium that form scale inside water heaters, tankless heat exchangers, faucets, showerheads, valves and appliances. Over time that reduces efficiency, causes noise and leaks, and shortens equipment life. A water softener, regular water heater flushing and tankless descaling are the main defenses.
Can be scheduled

Hard water is a slow problem, not an emergency, but it quietly shortens the life of expensive equipment.

Emergency, or can it wait?

Call right away if…

  • Water heater leaking from scale damage

Usually OK to schedule if…

  • Visible scale on fixtures

Signs of hard water problems

1White crust on faucets and showerheads
2Rumbling or popping water heater
3Tankless error codes or reduced flow
4Spotty dishes and stiff laundry
5Low pressure at fixtures from clogged aerators

What causes it

01

Mineral-rich source water

Groundwater and some rivers pass through limestone and other minerals.

02

Heat accelerates scale

Water heaters and tankless heat exchangers scale faster because heat drives minerals out of solution.

03

Well water with high mineral content

Private wells in limestone and mineral-rich regions can be much harder than municipal water, and they often carry iron or manganese as well.

04

No softener or a failed softener

A softener that has run out of salt, has a fouled resin bed or a broken control valve stops removing hardness, and scale returns quickly.

What you can check yourself

  • Check your utility’s water quality report for hardness
  • Look for scale on aerators and showerheads
  • Listen for rumbling in the water heater

What happens when a plumber arrives

  1. Measure hardness with a test kit or check the utility’s water quality report.
  2. Check whether an existing softener is regenerating and has salt.
  3. Inspect the water heater for sediment by flushing a few gallons from the drain valve.
  4. Check tankless units for scale-related error codes and descaling history.
  5. Look at aerators, showerheads and toilet tanks for mineral buildup.

Hard Water Problems: questions homeowners ask

How do I know if my water is hard?

Check your utility’s annual water quality report or test with hardness strips. White crust on fixtures is a strong hint.

Does hard water damage water heaters?

Yes. Sediment and scale reduce efficiency, cause noise and can shorten tank life.

Is a water softener worth it?

In hard-water areas, softeners protect water heaters, fixtures and appliances and reduce cleaning.

How often should a tankless heater be descaled?

Many manufacturers suggest yearly, and more often with very hard water.

Does hard water cause low water pressure?

It can. Scale narrows aerators, showerheads and valve cartridges, and in older galvanized pipe it adds to internal buildup that restricts flow.

How do I remove scale from showerheads and faucets?

Soak removable parts in white vinegar for a few hours, then scrub and rinse. If scale comes back fast, treating the water at the source is the long-term fix.

Will a softener fix scale that’s already inside my water heater?

No. A softener prevents new scale, but existing sediment must be flushed. A heavily scaled tank may need replacement.
